eFAQ: Blog Power

September 2007

THE POWER OF THE BLOG

brandUNITY has designed and built a number of seamless Wordpress blogs directly in the websites of many of our most active clients. We closely track our client blogs, and we are seeing some interesting results:

  • blogs gain PageRank in Google quickly
  • information-rich blogs can easily attract important incoming links from other blogs
  • you can participate in conversation with other bloggers to build a linking network nicely attracting the search engines
  • a regularly updated blog can help your entire site get crawled more frequently by search engines
  • blog pages can also be distributed through RSS fee

Here are some of the things you can do to ensure your blog brings you a healthy dose of site traffic. . .

  1. keep your blog content-rich and topic focused, to increase your potential for attracting significant inbound links
  2. participate in and encourage conversation with other bloggers
  3. regularly update your blog to help your entire site get crawled more often by search engines
  4. syndicate your blog pages using RSS

What is RSS?

RSS is the technology that let’s people subscribe to your blog. Your RSS subscribers receive the content of your updates directly on their computers through RSS news readers.

Associated Press, Business Week, and major newspapers receive their articles and news updates through RSS news feeds.

What’s a Ping?

Where RSS feeds send the actual content of your update to your subscribers, pings merely let the subscribers know that you have updated your blog. Sometimes this is done through email depending on the service you use to send the ping.

If by email, an automatic email message tells the subscribers to visit your blog for the full content. If your blog is on your website, this means your subscribers will automatically be invited to visit your website, everytime you update your blog. This is a highly effective, targeted means for increasing your site traffic.

Examples of blogging resources that will promote your blog for you are:

  • Technorati.com
  • Pingomatic.com
  • Blogwise.com
  • Globeofblogs.com
  • Blogsearchengine.com
  • Getblogs.com
  • Dig.com
  • Del.icious.com

Building traffic to your Blog

Begin discussions with other bloggers covering topics that are similar to yours. Many blogs automatically link back to your website, whenever you link to someone else’s blog post. The technology used to do this is called Trackback.

Another important consideration is your blog title because it is what will appear in many of the blog aggregators listed above. People will use your blog title listing to determine if they want to read your posts.

Regulary visit other blogs that cover topics similar to your own and comment on what you read. Google’s blog search will help you find other blogs:

Develop a list of other blogs that you find interesting and include them in your blogroll, aka, your blog's table of contents for other blogs that you link to.

Submitting articles

You can make your posts work even harder if you post short clips of longer articles that you have written. You can submit your longer articles to directories such as www.EzineArticles.com, creating cross-links between your shorter posts and your longer articles:

Blog Keywords

As with your website content, keywords need to be used in your blog posts. If you have had brandUNITY research your keywords for you, you will have a list of terms to include in your posts. Use keywords in some of the titles of your posts, but only if the keyword relates to the content of your post.

Posting Methods

1) Rather than including all of your posts on one page, it is better to create separate pages for each post. This makes is easier for your readers to link from topical posts from their blog to yours, and it makes it easier for the search engines to link to your posts.

2) Post regularly. Each time you post, the blog directories that you have subscribed to will list your new content. The more new content, the more links.

3) Find blogs that interest you and post to them. Blogs that support TrackBack will automatically link back to you. This builds your cross-traffic from other blog readers, hence building conversation and community. Most blogs will ask you for name, email, website address and your comment in order for you to ask permission to post to the blog.

Do not include a link to your blog in the content you post on other blogs. If your comments are good and apply to the content of the blog, the administrator will be glad to post your comments.
