One-third of adult internet users have profiles on social networking sites, according to a recent study by Pew Research. This represents a steady increase in Boomer social network usage over the past three years. PC magazine editor Lance Ulanoff suggests that the last six months have been a turning point, with more people from all age groups, embracing social networking.
Likewise, Comscore reports that 16.5 million people, 55 years and older, use social networking. Facebook is the fastest growing for the 30 and older age group.
Unlike their younger counterparts, Boomers are all about making new friends online, and reconnecting with people from the past. This age group does not want to be alone with their thoughts, according to Robin Wolaner, CEO of TDB.com.
That perspective is polar opposite to that taken by a group of accomplished women, mostly 45+ years and older, at their Pomegranate Dialogues monthly meeting on Bainbridge Island, WA. Solitude is enrichment which is destroyed by addiction to the internet, many contentiously agreed.
